Challenge
Engage the community, board and staff in a strategic planning process for a large community action agency while producing a concise, functional document.
Activities
- Conducted secondary research to assess community need
- Developed presentations and questions for community forums
- Conducted interviews with key community influencers
- Synthesized information to present to the board and management staff
- Facilitated three planning sessions
- Developed Excel model to track work plans
Results
- The board adopted new mission, vision, and values statements to refine the organization’s focus, and nine strategic goals to identify priority activities
- Management staff adopted the roles of “goal captains” to assure accountability for tasks identified in the plan and established a system for updating progress
- The board committed to implementing performance scorecards to track progress building internal capacity and achieving desired outcomes for clients and the community
